Axios seeks an ME for business and markets

Axios is dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news content in an audience-first format. We’re hiring a Managing Editor to oversee our Business and Markets coverage.

Why it Matters: In just seven years, Axios has built a newsroom of more than 150 talented journalists committed to providing our readers the most trustworthy information in the most efficient way possible. Reporting to our Executive Editor, the Managing Editor will play a critical role in sharpening our business coverage, supporting our talent and helping steer Axios to new successes.

Go deeper: You will oversee a team of subject matter experts, editors and reporters, and you’ll make an impact through the following responsibilities:

  • Guide coverage priorities, including breaking news, from reporters who support our business-focused newsletters: Axios Pro Rata, Axios Markets, Axios Macro, Axios Closer and Axios Crypto. These newsletters collectively cover markets, the economy, deals, finance, corporates, crypto and everything in between.
  • Contribute to deeply reported projects on multiple platforms including newsletters, website, video, podcasts, events and social media.
  • Manage the pipeline of breakthrough business stories pitched to broader Axios AM and Axios PM audiences.
  • Facilitate collaboration with other editorial teams across the Axios newsroom.

The Details: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit, a passion for Axios’ mission and have the following skills:

  • 15+ years experience covering and editing markets, business, finance, stocks & economics
  • Strong desire to field pitches, write and assign breaking news stories, and brainstorm the best ideas with reporters
  • Demonstrated experience conceptualizing big ideas and seeing them through
  • Analytical ability to cut through the noise and make it intelligible to other people
  • A proven track-record managing, recruiting, mentoring, and developing talent
  • A commitment to building and nurturing a diverse and inclusive environment
  • A belief in Smart Brevity as the core writing style of Axios

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $150,000 – $220,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation benefits. Axios’ compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.
